Welcome to Granola Family!

This blog has been an idea in the making for some time now, and I am excited to finally be starting it! Thank you to my husband, Ted, for your great input and ideas! (That's us below)

For my very first post, I would like to share a bit about myself and what Granola Family is all about!

My name is Becky and I’m a Registered Dietitian, mom of a busy toddler and wife of a husband who works long hours. I can appreciate how overwhelming it can be to provide healthy, less processed meals for your family that are also fairly quick and easy to make (and in our case, dairy free because our son, Charlie, has a cow's milk protein allergy). I can also appreciate how difficult it can be to discern all of the health and nutrition information/banter out there in order to make the best choices for your family. I started granolafamily.com to share wholesome meal/food ideas and discuss the latest nutrition information.

A bit on my professional background: I completed my undergraduate study in Dietetics at Miami University and earned a Masters Degree in Public Health Nutrition with a specialty in Maternal and Child Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. I previously directed a Cardiovascular Health Program which worked with businesses, schools and communities to implement wellness programs in Northeastern Ohio. Most recently, I worked as Senior Dietitian & Breastfeeding Coordinator for a local Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program providing nutrition assessment and counseling services for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and children. During my time with WIC, I also became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

“Everything in moderation” has become a bit of a cliché, but is really the foundation of a happy and healthy lifestyle. While I believe it is important to eat healthy, less processed foods the majority if the time, I also believe that enjoying an indulgence food, like a bowl of ice cream or a good piece of pizza is ok to do! Where we have gotten off track in our culture is that people are indulging in these foods in large quantities and very often, which has pushed fresh, whole, less processed foods out of focus. It is a nice, special thing to look forward to a good burger and fries (and a beer or two) on a Friday night, or a cookie from your favorite bakery while you're out enjoying the day with your family. The key is limiting these things to "sometimes." So in addition to the healthy foods that my family and I eat the majority of the time, I will post about the indulgences that we enjoy sometimes too!

The newest thing for our family is that we are trying to adapt our diet to be more plant-based. We are not becoming vegetarians, but trying to limit meat/poultry to a few times a week. With all of the polar-opposite opinions and research out there for vegan vs. paleo diets, I have come to the conclusion for now that a middle ground between the two makes the most nutritional and environmental sense. So come along on this ride with us as I share some of the foods we make! We just started buying some of our organic foods from Door to Door Organics (which supplies local foods whenever possible) and have been doing some delicious stuff with the amazing fresh produce that comes in our delivery!

I made this green smoothie this afternoon with the leftover kale, blueberries, banana and orange juice from last week's delivery (plus some chia seeds)..so good!

In addition to nutrition, I also have a love for pretty much all things simple and natural, from natural childbirth, to breastfeeding and Baby-Led Weaning, and adopting “greener” practices in our daily life. So you may see some posts about these topics as well. Check out our new rain barrel below! We just got two and plan to get some more next summer. We are pretty excited about them!

A very special thank you to my wonderful sister-in-law, Kate Banks, for all of her help with starting and designing granolafamily.com!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. This is really good news as you are really getting things back from where you are start it in that time and doing all the WIC services and you are really getting some help from the kind person who is your own husband.
